After working as a caregiver for 5+ years, I faced extreme burnout that manifested both physically and mentally: anxiety, stress, brain fog, insomnia, weight loss, GI issues, acne, and early onset gray hair (yikes) – the whole nine yards.
If you’ve been there, you get it. On a mission to fulfill your purpose, you give, give, give, and take nothing for yourself. It feels good at the time... Like you’re helping people and making the world a better place.
But then burnout sets in, and you realize that you can’t keep pouring from an empty cup. You might turn to caffeine, junk food, or alcohol in an attempt to fill the cup like I did, but it just doesn’t last.
Pizza parties in the break-room, vacations, and meditations don’t do the trick either.
After we’ve exhausted all of the available resources, we start to turn inward for answers. But it’s hard to dig those answers out. It takes time, dedication, and a hell of a lot of accountability to help ourselves without the consistent, positive support we so desperately need.
Eventually, we can get there, but having someone by our side to guide us along the way would make it so much easier.
